Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about someone's strengths and weaknesses in Spanish?
Welcome to Three Step Spanish Practice by SpanishPod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice describing someone's strengths and areas for improvement using expressions like es excelente en and necesita mejorar.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Valeria, tu hija Catalina participa mucho en clase.
"Valeria, your daughter Catalina participates a lot in class."
¡Qué bien! ¿En qué se destaca?
"That's great! What does she excel at?"
Es excelente en presentaciones orales, pero necesita mejorar su ortografía.
"She's excellent at oral presentations, but she needs to improve her spelling."
¿Podemos ayudarla en casa con ejercicios de escritura?
"Can we help her at home with writing exercises?"
In this lesson, we were looking at two useful patterns to describe someone's strengths and areas for improvement.
To say someone is good at something, we use phrases like es excelente en or se destaca en, followed by a field or skill, such as presentaciones orales.
This helps us politely point out what someone excels at.
On the other hand, when we want to express that someone needs to improve a certain ability, we use necesita mejorar, followed by the specific skill, like su ortografía.
These two patterns often appear together to give a balanced view of a person's abilities—what they do well and where there's room to grow.
For example,
Es excelente en presentaciones orales, pero necesita mejorar su ortografía means "She's excellent at oral presentations, but she needs to improve her spelling."
You can also ask, ¿En qué se destaca? to say "What does she excel at?" using the same pattern.
To form similar expressions, you can conjugate the verb necesitar in the present tense like this:
necesitar > necesito, necesitas, necesita, necesitamos, necesitáis, necesitan.
In this pattern, the conjugated form of necesitar is followed by the infinitive verb mejorar to create the phrase 'to need to improve.' This entire phrase is then followed by the specific skill that needs work.
Now let's practice using this grammar with some sentences.
