Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about what someone is doing right now in Spanish?
Welcome to Three Step Spanish Practice by SpanishPod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice describing what someone is doing right now using the present progressive tense.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
Está escribiendo con más cuidado. En este momento está redactando un resumen sobre historia.
"She's writing more carefully. At the moment, she's composing a summary about history."
Me alegra oír eso. En casa, está practicando la ortografía con un cuaderno especial.
"I'm glad to hear that. At home, she's practicing spelling with a special notebook."
In Spanish, the present progressive tense is used to talk about actions that are happening right now.
To form it, we use the verb estar in the present tense followed by the gerund form of another verb.
For example, está escribiendo means "she is writing."
The gerund, or gerundio, is the equivalent of the English "-ing" form.
For verbs ending in -ar, the gerund ends in -ando, like practicando from practicar.
For -er and -ir verbs, the gerund ends in -iendo, like escribiendo from escribir.
This structure lets us describe current actions clearly and naturally, like in the sentence Está escribiendo con más cuidado — "She's writing more carefully."
Now let's practice using this grammar with some sentences.
